Ways to Utilize the Library

Our MisinfoDay team is here to support as you incorporate MisinfoDay virtual content and resources in your lessons and/or host a MisinfoDay Jr event on your campus! Let us know about your plans or any questions you might have by emailing us at misinfoday@uw.edu.

Option A: Plug and support learning objectives

Educators can simply plug MisinfoDay content and activities into their lessons to support existing learning objectives.

Option B: Customize curriculum

Educators can adapt MisinfoDay-curated modules and resources to teach students about the landscape of misinformation and how to evaluate online information.

Option C: Launch MisinfoDay Jr in class (Project-based approach)

For active learning and deep engagement with the subject of misinformation/information literacy/digital literacy, educators can launch a MisinfoDay Jr project with their students (see the catalog to learn more about the MisinfoDay Jr project). Toward the end of the semester, students can present their projects to their peers, hosting a mini MisinfoDay event in class. To make the implementation process easier, a MisinfoDay toolkit is available in our catalog!

Option D: Host a MisinfoDay Jr/MisinfoNight on campus (Project-based approach)

Extending MisinfoDay Jr outside of the classroom, educators and their students can host a MsinfoDay Jr or MisinfoNight event on campus so that they can become teachers and share their knowledge with their friends and family! With request, CIP-affiliated experts can speak at the event with advance notice. Learn more about hosting a MisinfoDay/Night event in our catalog and how MisinfoNight can be run on your campus by reading Ballard High School’s success story!

MisinfoNight In-Person Event at Ballard High School in Seattle

In June 2022, Mr. Lee, Mr. Morean, Mr. Holmgren and Ms. Dowdy’s students hosted the second MisinfoNight on their campus in person. The event features interactive presentations from 300 9th-grade world history students. A keynote speaker kicked off the event in the auditorium, then families visited student stations, set up in science fair style, to learn about confirmation bias, algorithms, and concrete steps they could take to investigate unfamiliar sources and claims. After their presentation, students asked family members to pull out their phone and practices what they had just learned on example posts.

MisinfoDay Jr Virtual Event with AP US History Students

In 2020, Mr. Lee and his students from Ballard High School in Seattle hosted a 1-hour Zoom event for their families after spending 8 weeks learning about misinformation. They covered confirmation bias, social media algorithms, fact-checking sites, investigating sources, and verifying photos in 5-minute interactive presentations that asked audience members to practice the skills they were learning.

MisinfoDay Jr In-Person Event with AP US History Students

In June 2020, Mr. Lee hosted the first MisinfoDay Jr in-person event at Ballard High School in Seattle. Lee’s AP US History students spent three weeks learning about the (mis)information landscape, then create 10-minute interactive presentations that they presented to 9th-grade students through a station rotation module in the library. Topics included confirmation bias, lateral reading, spotting fake photos and videos and source evaluation.

Join Us in Amplifying the Mission!

As the MisinfoDay program gains momentum to tackle misinformation and build healthy information environments, we are aiming to expand the program to include more schools, students and educators from across the U.S. We would love for other colleges and universities to become a partner institution and join us in amplifying the mission by hosting an in-person event on your campus for your community of learners!
