The Award
The CIP Award for Impact & Excellence recognizes outstanding contributions, achievements, or bodies of work that significantly resist strategic misinformation, promote an informed society, and strengthen democratic discourse. It is intended to highlight the work of individuals and organizations making a positive impact in mitigating the challenges of mis- and disinformation.
Established in 2021, the CIP Award for Impact & Excellence comes with an award of $5,000. The recipient of the award will receive a commemorative plaque and is invited to visit the center and give a talk on their work. The award will recognize work in one or more of four categories: research, education, engagement, or law and policy. A second award, if merited, will especially recognize the work of an early-career professional or scholar (including students and postdoctoral scholars).
The CIP is grateful to the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation for their foundational support for the Center for an Informed Public’s work and research.
Criteria
The following criteria will be among the factors considered in the selection process:
- Excellence: Successful nominees will have demonstrated excellence in their contributions to mitigating the challenges of mis- and disinformation.
- Impact: Successful nominees will have demonstrated that their work has had, or shows great promise for, societal impact. This could include basic research, technologies, educational tools, visualizations, or other artifacts that translate research into practice. Consideration will be given to impact evident in one or more communities as well as engagement with underrepresented or hard-to-reach groups or populations. Impact could also include influencing policy at local or national levels. Further consideration will be given to contributions that lay the groundwork for others and/or that have the potential to influence important future advances in the field.
- Innovation: Successful nominees will break new ground in their work and/or demonstrate exceptional creativity.
Selection Process & Eligibility
- Each year, a multidisciplinary selection committee reviews and evaluates all nominations. Each nomination is considered with respect to the award’s selection criteria and the four award categories. Decisions of the committee are final. The committee will consist of leaders in the mis- and disinformation field, including one member of the CIP Faculty.
- In 2023, the nomination period opens Thursday, March 1 and closes Sunday, March 26. The award winner will be announced later in the spring.
- Nominations may be made by individuals or organizations; one nominator can nominate multiple candidates. Self-nominations are allowed; a letter of support from someone who can speak to the nominee’s qualifications is required. Prior nomination does not exclude a candidate from subsequent nomination/consideration.
- Although nominees are reviewed for their achievements, the award is not exclusively intended to recognize lifetime achievement. The Selection Committee may choose to name an additional early-career recipient for their contributions to the field. There are no restrictions on who is eligible for the award. It is possible that the award(s) may not be given every year.
- The CIP seeks as diverse a pool of award nominations as possible, including a wide range of disciplines, experiences, and perspectives. All award winners are expected to meet the commonly held standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity.
Nomination Requirements
To submit a nomination, please supply the following:
- A letter (maximum 2 pages) detailing the contributions or work that the nominee has contributed to the field. The nomination and references (below) should be as specific and complete as possible, and should include the full name of the nominator and the relationship of the nominator to the nominee. Links to projects, papers, contributions, or additional information are encouraged. Please also indicate if the nominee is particularly suited for the early-career designation.
- At least two letters of reference in support of the nomination (but no more than four).
