  • PolitiFact (March 12): “Princess Kate’s altered photo: What experts say happened and how to spot manipulated content online
    In an interview with PolitiFact, CIP co-founder Jevin West, an associate professor in the UW Information School, said: “This is a big year. We need to bring public attention to it and consumers should remain extra vigilant. There are really consequential decisions happening around the world, all at a time when AI is rising and becoming more sophisticated and making it harder to tell what’s real or not.”

  • Oregon Public Broadcasting (March 18): “UW study reveals how social media influencers profit from spreading misinformation” 
    CIP senior research scientist Rachel Moran-Prestridge, a staff researcher at the UW Information School, was interviewed for Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Think Out Loud” program about research she helped lead work styding Instagram influencers who spread vaccine misinformation with messaging that appealed to users with varying interests, from fashion to homeschooling.

  • National Public Radio (March 21): “AI images and conspiracy theories are driving a push for media literacy education
    In a segment that aired on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” by KUOW Public Radio’s Kim Malcolm profiles the MisinfoDay 2024 educational event for Washington high school, teachers and librarians co-hosted by the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public and Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication. CIP co-founder Jevin West, a UW Information School associate professor, was interviewed, and UW Biology professor Carl Bergstrom, who co-created UW’s “Calling Bullshit” course with West, is referenced.

  • NBC News (March 23): “The disinformation war has taken a toll, but researchers feel a shift
    CIP director and co-founder Kate Starbird, a UW Human Centered Design & Engineering associate professor, was referenced and interviewed for a NBC News article about political and legal attacks on academic researchers studying mis- and disinformation. The article also referenced a rapid research report released in March by the CIP’s team studying the 2024 U.S. elections examining “border crisis” narratives and claims of “rigged elections.”
