UW’s Tech Policy Lab, CIP co-hosting virtual book talk with Kate Crawford to discuss role of AI and politics, and the planetary costs of AI

Apr 30, 2021

On Thursday, May 13 at 4 p.m. PDT, the University of Washington’s Tech Policy Lab and Center for an Informed Public will co-host a virtual book talk featuring Kate Crawford, a leading scholar of the social implications of artificial intelligence and author of the recently published book, Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence (Yale University Press, April 2021).

The book talk will be moderated by CIP co-founder and UW School of Law professor Ryan Calo.

As MIT Technology Review’s Karen Hao wrote in a recent book review:

By grounding her analysis in such physical investigations, Crawford disposes of the euphemistic framing that artificial intelligence is simply efficient software running in “the cloud.” Her close-up, vivid descriptions of the earth and labor AI is built on, and the deeply problematic histories behind it, make it impossible to continue speaking about the technology purely in the abstract.

What forces obscure AI’s material impacts and extractive demands on the environment? How does AI contribute to societal ills such as misinformation? And what strategies exist, if any, to reorient AI in the service of human dignity and flourishing? Tune in on May 13 and watch the livestream here
